Getting the Right Balance ....
- Good
quality is often associated with high costs which is essentially correct
but when you are looking at Value for Money it's all about ensuring that
the performance is adequate at an acceptable cost.
- It
is almost impossible to assess the Quality of the parts used in a computer
from its specification. You have to look at other factors such as how the
computer is built and marketed.
- Any company who uses low cost as their
main selling point would find it difficult to claim that Quality is high
on their agenda.
- A
lot of big companies are "Box Shifters" which means that they sell large
quantities at their cheapest price which will give them a desired profit
level.
- If
you sell in large quantities this means that you must build and purchase
components in large quantities which in itself can pose difficult quality
control management issues therefore you could expect more than average
failures particularly outside the warranty period.
- Another
aspect of computer quality is its upgradeability. Quite often a computer
which is produced to a budget price is only capable of delivering the
stated specification and not much more.
A lot of words about what happens in the real world but what
can you do about ensuring that the quality of your next computer is adequate
for your needs.
- Always
deal with companies who are prepared to provide honest information and
discuss options with you and let you make the decision.
- Don't
deal with companies who only focus on low cost.
- Always
make your decisions based on a balance between cost and quality.
